BSB31007 Certificate III in Business Administration (Legal)

Through an online virtual environment, students assume the role of a legal administration assistant for a virtual legal firm.

There are 10 online tutorials that simulate the type of activities a legal administration assistant would undertake in a real legal office. Each tutorial contains instructions and resources for completing a series of activities related to that particular tutorial.

To successfully complete and obtain this qualification, a student is required to complete 13 units of competency. These 13 competencies are clustered in a meaningful manner throughout the 10 tutorials. The 13 units of competency are as follows:

CORE UNITS OF COMPETENCY HOURS

BSBITU307A - Develop keyboarding speed and accuracy

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to develop keyboard skills with speed and accuracy using touch typing techniques.

BSBOHS201A - Participate in OHS processes

This unit covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to participate in workplace occupational health and safety (OHS) processes to protect workers own health and safety, and that of others.

ELECTIVE UNITS OF COMPETENCY HOURS

BSBLEG301A  Apply knowledge of the legal system to complete tasks

This unit covers the completion of a range of common legal administrative duties and the knowledge of the legal system that is required to carry them out.

BSBLEG303A - Deliver court documentation

This unit covers organising court documents for delivery, planning a schedule of delivery, delivering documents to the appropriate courts and returning proof of document lodgement.

BSBLEG304A - Apply the principles of confidentiality and security within the legal environment

This unit covers the use of ethical behaviour when dealing with sensitive and confidential information in a legal environment. This unit is based on the generic principles stated in the State’s Legal Practice Acts. It is essential that these principles are followed and that they inform all aspects of work in a legal office.

BSBLEG305A - Use legal terminology in order to carry out tasks

This unit covers understanding and using legal terminology in order to undertake tasks.

BSBLEG306A – Maintain records for time and disbursements in a legal practice

This unit covers demonstrating an understanding of maintaining time records and entering disbursements incurred.

BSBLEG308A  Assist in prioritising and planning activities in a legal practice

This unit covers assisting others (for example, Partner, Solicitor, Fee Earner, Human Resources Manager, External Client) to organise a legal schedule. This involves arranging appointments and other activities based upon court dates and required legislative timelines.

BSBINM303A - Handle receipt and despatch of information.

This unit covers receiving and distributing incoming mail and collecting and despatching outgoing mail.

BSBADM307B - Organise schedules

This unit covers how to manage appointments and diaries for personnel within an organisation, using manual and electronic diaries, schedules and other appointment systems.

BSBITU302A - Create electronic presentations

This unit covers designing and producing electronic presentations for speakers, for self access and for online access.

BSBITU306A - Design and produce business documents

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to produce various business documents. It includes the skills and knowledge required to select and use a range of functions in Microsoft Word and Excel.

BSBWRT301A - Write simple documents

This unit covers how to plan, draft and review a basic document before writing the final version.

Note: The hours listed above are the nominal hours it might take for a student to complete each unit of competency. This includes undertaking activities within Workbooks, reading the additional learning resources, undertaking research and completing assessments.

Once all assessments for the 13 units have been successfully completed you will be awarded the Certificate III in Business Administration (Legal) qualification. If for some reason you are unable to complete all 13 units of the Certificate III in Business Administration (Legal), a Statement of Attainment will be awarded to you upon successful completion of assessments for each unit of competency completed.

Assessment

There are assessment tasks that are required to be completed for each unit of competency. Assessments provide evidence that a student has obtained the necessary skills and knowledge within each unit of competency.

Assessments should be completed once a student has completed a tutorial. These assessments should then be submitted to MMLC’s Learning Manager for marking.

Employment and Further Study Options

After successfully completing this qualification students will have obtained the skills and experience necessary to gain employment in an entry level role in a legal firm or legal environment. MMLC works closely with Melissa Mahoney Recruitment who can assist students who are studying or who have completed the qualification to gain employment within the legal industry.

Students who complete the Certificate III in Business Administration (Legal) are eligible to undertake the Certificate IV in Legal Services which MMLC also offers on an external study basis.

Students can also use some of the units of competency within Certificate III in Business Administration (Legal) as recognition of prior learning (RPL) if they choose to study other qualifications under the Business Services Training Packages framework.

Pre-requisites

Successful completion of Year 10 English and Mathematics are pre-requisites for acceptance into this course.
