Self-care and legal studies; getting the balance right

legal studies

When you’re working full-time, completing your legal studies online, and trying to deal with life in general, everything sometimes just becomes too much. You’re only human and burnout happens when you push too hard. This is why self-care can’t slip through the cracks.

You deserve it

You know you work hard and other people can see it too. What’s a job well done without a reward? But self-care isn’t just an achievement/reward system. It’s setting aside time for you; to take care of your general health and well-being. Self-care is scientifically proven to boost performance and make us feel good in general.

Don’t go full throttle

At least not all the time. Feeling motivated is amazing and you can get lots done in a short period of time when the feeling hits. But it’s mentally and physically impossible to be that way 100 percent of the time.

If you must dedicate yourself to a task, set aside a certain time for it. This can be anything: completing that assignment, cooking dinner for the family, finishing those jobs for the boss.

Your body and brain is a machine

One that needs to run smoothly to function properly. You’re not an automaton doing tasks mindlessly. You’re working all the time, doing your best to be productive at work, home, and in your legal studies.

So what’s something you can do to make sure you’re in top shape? It’s not just one thing, but many. And they’re all things you’ve heard before.

  • Get  solid sleep.
  • Turn off the devices before bed. Go to bed with a book instead.
  • Exercise, preferably something that makes you sweat.
  • Eat well. Mum’s cooking is usually best, but UberEats works too (in moderation).
  • Study hard in short bursts.

When you’re working and studying at the same time, getting overwhelmed happens occasionally. If it’s happening frequently, it’s time to whip the calendar out to make sure you have the plan  in sight and on paper. Not just in your head. That’s one of the reasons you’re crashing in the first place!
